My favorite Rebellion ship in the Star Wars universe is the A-wing. Designed by Alliance General Jan Dodonna, the small wedge shaped ship is the fastest ship in the fleet ( besides the Millennium Falcon). Each component of the ship is crammed into the tiny hull, so the lightest hit often results in critical system failures or the destruction of the ship.
A-wings have a sensor jamming system that can disrupt the readings of enemy star fighters. An attempt to jam a larger ship, such as a Correlian Corvette, isn't that effective, while an attempt to jam a Star Destroyer is just plain foolish. The A-wing also carries two laser cannons and 2 concussion missile launchers, each with a magazine of 6 missiles.
The a-wing was originally designed to protect transports from raids, but Rebellion tacticians soon learned that the ship was better for 'Hit and fade' attack. The A-wing slash was an attack when slower ships would distract the TIE's, then the a-wings closed in on the capital ships and cut them to ribbons.
The Alliance's Snowspeeders have protected it numerous times when the Empire attempts to assault the planet by AT-ATs. While the Snowspeeders usually get destroyed, they give Rebel personnel the time they need to escape.
The Snowspeeders weaponry is light. It has only two blasters and the tow cable. The tow cable is perhaps its greatest weapon in defeating the AT-ATs of the Empire. The Snowspeeders wrap their tow cables around the legs of the Empire's walkers to trip them.
Since the Snowspeeder has no shields, it is relatively undefended. It relies on it's super fast speed to outmaneuver enemy fighters and walkers.
The TIE fighter is my favorite Imperial ship. Designed by Sienar Fleet Systems, the TIE fighter has been the symbol of the Empire since it's beginning. TIE fighters are present at almost every Imperial spaceport, capital ship, and practically everywhere across the galaxy.
Unlike most Rebellion fighters, the TIE fighter has no hyperdrive, making it dependent upon a 'home base'. Instead, it only has only a sublight engine, two laser cannons, no shield generators, and no life support system, forcing the pilot to wear a fully sealed environment suit, and minimum fuel amounts, forcing the TIE fighter to refuel after about two hours of flying.
The TIE fighter is produced in the thousands, and pilots are regularly graduating from academies, so TIE losses are considered inconsequential, as long as the military goal is achieved, which shows that the Imperials have little or no value for life.
The TIE Interceptor was developed from the TIE Advanced x1, Darth Vader's custom TIE fighter that he used for his own personal flight. Since the TIE Advanced x1 was expensive to produce, the empire designed the TIE Interceptor, which is similar in some ways to the TIE Advanced x1.
Like all Empire fighters, the Interceptor has no shields and no hyperdrive, making it dependent on a 'home base' or Capital Ship. But it has the same wing pattern as the TIE Advanced x1. This diagram: (--) slightly resembles the TIE Interceptor when looking at it head on. It has four laser cannons and has the recognizable pilot's pod on all TIE fighters.
When Grand Admiral Thrawn made his campaign against the New Republic, he began arming the TIE Interceptors with shields, knowing that these excellent fighters should be no longer 'disposable'.
The TIE Bomber serves as the Empire's main bomber and heavy assault fighter. Unlike the TIE fighter and interceptor which have one round pod, the TIE bomber has two cylindrical pods, one serving as the cockpit, the other serving as the missile bay.
The TIE bomber's main weapon is it's proton torpedo launcher, located on the port side of the fighter. It can be refitted to carry concussion missiles or thermal detonators as well. TIE bombers can carry ( only one at a time ) : 12 proton torpedoes, 16 concussion missiles, or 64 thermal detonators. Two lasers provide protection against enemy fighters.
A Stardestroyer, the empire's main wedge-shaped capital ship, carried one squadron of these fighters, which is twelve ships. Before the Emperor's death, the Empire developed a better TIE Bomber, known as the Scimitar Assault Bomber.
The Scimitar Assault Bomber is a bomber that is 'evolved' from the TIE bomber. It was ordered into mass production when Grand Admiral Thrawn made his campaign against the New Republic.
The Scimitar Assault Bomber's weaponry includes 16 concussion missiles, many more torpedoes and thermal detonators than the TIE bomber carried and 2 laser cannons. Unlike most Imperial fighters, the Scimitar Assault Bomber has shields, considering the fact that Grand Admiral Thrawn considered these fighters too valuable to be 'disposable'.
The Scimitar Assault Bomber was used extensively in Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign against the New Republic. A full wing of bombers (72 ships) was used in one of Thrawn's feints before his final attack on Couruscant (the New Republic's base planet).
The Lambda Class Shuttle is a cargo and passenger shuttle that was used by the Imperials, Although after the fall of the Emperor, the New Republic started using this craft more often.
The shuttle's weaponry includes ten laser cannons, eight front and two back, and multiple shield generators. The craft was very difficult to destroy.
The Rebel Alliance used the stolen shuttle Tydirium to transport an Alliance attack team to the forest moon of Endor. The Rebels succeeded in destroying a massive shield generator on the moon, Allowing for the Alliance to destroy the Second Death Star.
The X-wing was one of the most advanced fighters when Luke blew up the Death Star with it. Although many more fighters have come along since then, the X-wing has assured it's place in history. But the X-wing was almost an Imperial Fighter! When the X-wing was in it's final development stages at Incom, the Empire seized the Incom corporation. The Rebellion helped Incom's staff defect; they took with them all the prototypes and plans of the X-wing and finished it at a Rebel base.
The X-wing has moveable wings, allowing a greater field of fire. Each wing tip has a laser cannon attached to it. Underneath the 'nose' of the ship is located its 2 proton torpedo launchers. Each launcher carries a magazine of three torpedoes. It's shield generators are high-powered Chempat Shield Generators, which lets it take a lot of punishment before they go.
Like Y-wings, X-wings have a hyperdrive and an R2D2 unit. Most Rebel pilots often train on Incom's T-16 Skyhopper, which has very similar controls to the X-wing. So they often don't need much training in the actual X-wing, risking losing expensive ships.
Designed by Koensayr, the Y-wing is an older design than most fighters. Before X-wings, Y-wings were the flagship fighters of the Rebellion. Their reputation for durability is strong, but their limitations were made clear when only one fighter survived the Battle of Yavin, forcing the newer X-wings to make the Death Star run.
Y-wings can fly several mission types, usually light bombers or star fighters. Equipped with a proton torpedo launch bay, with a magazine of 8 torpedoes, a pair of ion cannons and laser cannons, and powerful shields and hull, Y-wings are fairly good star fighters, while the newer A-wings and B-wings are quite better.
Y-wings are slowly being retired as the newer ships take over, while they still serve the purpose of light bombers for totaling lightly defended bases or slow Imperial Convoys.
The B-wing, designed by then Commander Ackbar, was the Rebellion's top star fighter at the Battle of Endor. It carries more firepower on it than most Imperial ships, giving the Rebellion a powerful fighter that was cheaper than a capital ship.
The B-wing's weaponry includes: 3 high-powered laser cannons, 3 ion cannons, 2 proton torpedo launchers, and 2 to 4 autoblasters in the 'nose' section. The proton torpedo launchers can be fired together, giving it maximum firepower against a single target. (We'll have to keep that in mind when we wipe out the Rebellion.)
B-wings have a class 2 hyperdrive, which is slower than most star fighters. But unlike other star fighters, the B-wing has a navicomputer and can store 10 sets of coordinates.
Frei-tek's E-wing made the company famous. The E-wing was the main Alliance fighter at the time of the Battle of Calamari.
The E-wing is greatly known for its firepower. Three laser cannons provide fire against fighters, while its 16 proton torpedoes make it an excellent medium assault fighter. The only drawback is that the laser cannons are under powered, because they use synthetically spin sealed Tibanna gas.
The E-wing has been modified to suit different missions. It has a fixed wing design, which some people consider superior to moveable wing designs. The E-wing quickly proved this fact to be true at the Battle of Calamari.
Capital Ships
The Mon Calamari Cruiser is the main starship of the New Republic. The Mon Calamari Cruisers were originally pleasure cruisers for the Mon Calamari species. When the Empire targeted Mon Calamari though, Ackbar convinced his world that their starships would be going to a good cause if they donated them to the Rebellion. Several were immeadiently refitted for service in the Rebellion's main fleet.
Mon Calamari Cruisers maintain 48 turbolasers, 20 ion cannons, and multiple shield projectors and tractor beams, plus 3 squadrons of fighters. Some Mon Calamari Cruisers have been refitted to carry 10 squadrons of fighters, such as Admiral Ackbar's Home One. Standard Mon Calamari Cruisers are approximately 1100 meters in length.
The Mon Cals have continued to build cruisers for the Alliance, and went on to build a number of advanced forms of them, such as the Mon Remonda.
The Empire's Star Destroyers form the core of it's military navy. Bristling with weaponry and troops, it can keep an entire planet within its grasp. One Star Destroyer can often engage whole Rebel fleets and still expect victory.
Star Destroyers carry 60 turbolasers, 60 ion cannons, and the enormous shield generators located atop the bridge. The main docking bay is 150 meters long, allowing it to capture any ship around or below the dimensions of a Correlian Corvette, while the secondary docking bay launches all the AT-ATs and AT-STs.
The Empire began to create upgraded versions of Star Destroyers after the Battle of Endor, including the Executor and the Eclipse. The Executor was 8000 meters in length, while the Eclipse was 17,500 meters long!
The Super Stardestroyer was the largest ship in space when it came off the production line (besides the Death Star). The Super Stardestroyer was over 8000 meters long!
The Super Stardestroyer was almost impractical it had so many weapons. It had over a thousand weapons, including turbolasers, concussion missile tubes, tractor beam projectors, and ion cannons. It could easily destroy or capture any New Republic ship.
The Executor, Darth Vader's flagship, was destroyed at the Battle of Endor. It was rammed in the bridge by an A-wing fighter when its shields were down. This caused a loss of navigational control, and this massive ship collided with the Second Death Star, whose gravity pulled it in. Only moments later, the Second Death Star was destroyed.
The Death Star is the largest ship ever built in space. It was also the only ship with sufficient firepower to destroy planets, although it was intended by some of the scientists who designed it that it would only be used on deserted planets to mine materials from the fragments of the planet.
The Death Star had over 15, 000 turbolasers and ion cannons, and could carry 7,000 Tie fighters. It's seven hundred tractor beam projectors could capture any ship, including a Star Destroyer. It's main weapon, the planet destroying superlaser, was only used twice: once to destroy the planet of Despayre (Where the Death Star was built) as a test, and the second time to destroy Princess Leia's home world of Alderaan.
The Death Star was destroyed orbiting the planet of Yavin, where the Rebels had launched an attack from their hidden base on Yavin IV. Grand Moff Tarkin had refused to launch TIE Fighters in the stations defense, and the Death Star was destroyed by Luke Skywalker. Darth Vader was the only person who had escaped.
The Correlian Corvette was the main starship of the Rebellion, until the time of the Mon Calamari Cruisers. The Tantive IV was Princess Leia's main ship, until it was captured and destroyed above the desert world of Tatooine.
Standard Correlian Corvettes carry six Taim and Bak turbolaser cannons and heavily reinforced shields.
The Tantive IV was the Rebellion ship that intercepted the Death Star plans. A double agent hid a tracking beacon on the ship and the Devastator, Darth Vader's Star Destroyer, came out of hyperspace behind it and captured it.
Carrack Cruisers have been part of the Empire since the days of Emperor Palpatine's rise to power. At three hundred meters long, the Carrack Cruisers are quite heavily armed, making the Imperial Navy slow to retire these excellent cruisers.
Carrack Cruisers carry 10 heavy turbolasers, 20 ion cannons, and 5 tractor beam projectors. The Anti-starfighter version has 10 heavy turbolasers, 20 laser cannons to replace the ion cannons, and the five tractor beams. A major drawback though, is that the Carrack Cruiser has no hangar bay. Instead, exterior TIE racks carry FIVE TIE fighters. Also, there is insufficient shielding around the power generators. A good hit just aft of the Carrack's mid-line has a good chance of disabling the vessel.
Carrack Cruisers have a very strong hull system. Often, rescue crews have found the crew still alive inside of drifting wreckage. This unusual system takes up a great deal of hull space, but greatly increases crew survival rates.
The AT-ATs of the Empire form the main ground part of the Empire's ground assault forces. They often go into battle first, due to their nearly impenetrable armor. After they demoralize the enemy, there is no trouble destroying them.
The AT-AT had two heavy lasers, mounted on the 'chin.' The shielding of the AT-AT could withstand Proton Torpedo blasts, making them nearly impervious to attack.
AT-ATs are commonly known for their victory at Hoth. Following the data of a probe droid, the AT-ATs destroyed the Shield Generator and numerous defenses, allowing for the sensitive units to move in and attack.
The AT-STs of the Empire are excellent scout walkers, while open to attack. The Imperial base at Endor had several of these for perimeter defense, while one was even used in the Battle of Hot.
The weaponry of the AT-ST includes two blasters, light laser cannons, concussion grenade launchers, and cutting claws on the 'feet'. The AT-ST has no shields, making them fairly vulnerable.
The Imperial base at Endor had several of these walkers, all of which were captured or destroyed. The Ewoks, teamed up with the rebels, destroyed two of them by using primitive tricks and traps, while Chebacca and two Ewoks captured one and used it to destroy the third one.
